Lewis Krakauer: Lewis is Jon Krakauer’s father. He was a very volatile and extremely complicated person. Although he loved his five children deeply and he taught Jon how to climb, he was relentlessly competitive and saw life as a contest. From the time Jon was in kindergarten, his dad was preparing for him to go to Harvard Medical School. Once Lewis realized that Jon was straying from his foolproof plan, he barely spoke to Jon. He eventually developed polio and was in excruciating pain. He started medicating himself which caused his mind to crumble. This caused him to attempt suicide and was placed in a psychiatric hospital. Will and Linda Forsberg: Healy dog mushers who owned one of the private cabins two miles away from the bus where Chris was staying. Their cabin was completely trashed with food gone and windows broken. Will suspected that Chris was the one who destroyed their cabin. Steve Carwile: He also believes it was Chris who wrecked his cabin, but also thinks that Chris was the kind of person who wants to “set the wilderness free” and destroying the cabins would be a way of doing that.
